Getting to Know TREW Athlete, Jack Hessler

By Jess Joyner on

The mountain is a canvas.

The mountain is Jack’s canvas. Jumps are everywhere, transitions are abundant, and with every turn, a new reality emerges.

Jack fell in love with skateboarding and snowboarding when he was a child. He spent his younger years competing in slopestyle and half-pipe events and during his teenage years, struggled to manage his budding queerness with his passion for action sports. While never leaving snowboarding behind, Jack has also channeled his passion for riding into filmmaking, with the goal of telling stories that inspire empathy, self-actualization, and an appreciation for the unique aspects that make us all individuals.

It goes without saying, (but we'll tell you anyway :) that Jack is a TREW artist on his board and his stoke and commitment shines through in every turn. He has a low-grade obsession with life upside down and a penchant for deep POW landings at his home-hill at Snowbird in Utah.

We'll Let Jack Tell Us More......

WHERE DO YOU LIVE CURRENTLY?
Salt Lake City, UT

HOME RESORT?
Snowbird

ONE PLANK OR TWO?
One! Snowboarder

WHAT DOES YOUR IDEAL DAY OF RIDING LOOK LIKE?

Hanging in the parking lot a half-hour before the lifts open cracking jokes and freestyling with friends. Getting first chair on a bluebird POW day and heading straight to our favorite zone to lap it until we've bomb-holed all the hits. Then go for a hike and slash some POW waves, finishing it off with a session of questionable lines that get the adrenaline going. Then off to grab a beer at the bar once the lifts close.

HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE PRIDE MONTH AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

I spend more time with queer people, especially young people, to share our stories and celebrate each other. I also of course go out for a few late nights to dance my heart out! This year I've gotten into DJ-ing and have made sure to get more George Michael songs in the mix. Also just hiking and living life, reflecting on how different it is now than it used to be!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RIDING?

The feeling of flying through the air, carving through powder, and the shared experience of doing it all with friends.

FAVORITE APRÉS TREAT?

Hot chocolate never fails. Neither does Chex Mix.

GO-TO KARAOKE SONG?

"Hallowed Be Thy Name" by Iron Maiden.

WHO WOULD WIN IN A FIGHT BETWEEN A TACO AND A GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH?

Grilled cheese! That cheese has been through a lot.

BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN RIDING OR IN LIFE?

One of them is definitely Harvey Milk, look him up if you don't know his story. But anyone who fought for us to be able to live our lives. And Kendrick Lamar, the way he just worked as hard as he could to become the best artist possible, then went mainstream while still making conscious albums, it's amazing.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE?

We need to make a second pride month that's in the Northern hemisphere winter so that we can all have a big gay ski day!

Huge thank you to Jack for taking the time to share more with us at TREW about the man behind the camera.

Jack also tipped us off to a great organization
providing essential mental health services to LGBTQ+ youth, young adults, and families that is near and dear to him in his hometown of Salt Lake City called Encircle.

Keep up with Jack on Instagram @jah_he and check out the link in his bio to see some of his amazing film work and read some of his interviews.
